The Location of RMK

RMK is located in Shenzhen’s Nanshan district, not far from Hong Kong and next to futian.  RMK is in an upscale district, known for its commercial and entertainment. Situated in the CBD of Nanshan, it’s not just a bar and neither is it a cocktail bar, it’s a Shouchu bar. Which reflects the owners love of the Japanese drink. The location makes it a prime spot for both locals and visitors looking to enjoy a night out in one of Shenzhen’s premier neighborhoods.

The Ambience

As you walk up the stairs into RMK, you are greeted by a warm, snug bar with a long section that sets the tone for the evening. While the bar itself feels cozy and intimate, RMK is actually a sprawling venue with multiple sections, including a chic VIP room and a spacious dance floor. When i was there a local DJs from Electric Kitchen played a gig. And let me tell you if you are a member of their WeChat group you should be, because they play at venues all across Nanshan and Baoan. Honestly I had no idea what Electric Kitchen was, I just thought it was the music theme for the night, and it kind of was. But actually referred to a team of electronic DJs that play around Shenzhen. One of the those organisers and DJs was Chris and as the other DJs arrived I discovered they were from a diverse range of countries. A whole gang of friends also joined the evening. Although typically a locat bar, Electric Kitchen drew in an awesome mix of revellers, which really gave it an international integrated vibe, which is fantastic for any night out. Then the electric house music began around 10 PM, which is awesome because this is certainly one of my favourite genres of music.

The decor, of the bar is hard to nail down, for me it’s a combination of themes. It’s part typical cocktail but at the same time it has an edgy lounge feeling.but there again it has an awesome dance floor reminiscent of a club. RMK definitely has a young professional which is not surprising considering its location. RMK a cosmopolitan yet laid-back feel. such establishment that has stood the test of time is RMK, a well-established bar with a decade-long legacy in Shenzhen. The name “RMK” gets its name from the initials of its three owners, Rex, Manto, and Kai, who have built a loyal following over the years at this bar in Shenzhen.

Rex, Mantou and Kai are the owners were also around and mingled with their regulars but also made newcomers equally feel welcome. By the time the party got going, there was a fantastic mix of young, and older professionals and party goers and the evening stretched far into the night.

The Drinks

For anyone arriving at RMK you walk up a flight of stair and enter into a warm snug feeling long bar. One of the favourite drinks here is Shouchu, which is:

Shochu and awamori are distilled beverages with an alcohol content of 20-40%, offering a satisfying kick for solo sipping or socializing over a meal. While shochu is often associated with rice, it can also be made from sweet potatoes, wheat, or sugar cane. Popular across Japan, shochu’s regional appeal is particularly strong in Kyushu and  Okinawa.

Don’t get me wrong it also serves amazing cocktails, which is one of the things the bar is famous for. Of course they serve beer, wine and any stronger sporty you’d hope to drink.

On this particular night I arrived early around 9 as I always do. The long section of the bar is the first part you will see as you walk in. There was  already a scattering of patrons, mostly girls. The other side of the bar which is larger and connected to the DJ dance area, was pretty empty. Then the DJ’s came in to set up.

The Food

They do have real decent simple bar food, I had chicken and fries that were easily in line with the rest of their quality. To be honest I was treated by one of the bosses, so I was a little shy about pouring through their food menu. But what I had was excellent.

Value For Money

The RMKs are at premium locations and their prices reflect, the quality and service that goes with that. Prepare to budget for it. In my opinion though it well worth the prices.

Final Thoughts

RMK is one of the best bars I have been to in Shenzhen, they don’t comprise on the quality of the food and drinks, neither on their music or service. Their service is excellent by the way. If your looking for a great night out in Nanshan, they have locations in Upper Hills too. its hard to find better than this, there is a reason why it has remained one of Shenzhen’s premier bars.

if your are looking for something similar check out my reviews on Echo PMBorra and Chera, or Cafe Society, and Baker’s Base, all in Futian. If your looking something different check out the review for Rongli (rockys bar) and then there is also another great spot in Lotiko in Nanshan. Although DABhaus has good cocktails, if your specifically looking for this try Cement, Ben’s bar or DABhaus
