Bakers Base

If you have been in China for any time you will have seen how Chinese coffee consumption has exploded. You certainly don’t have to go to Beijing, Guangzhou or Shanghai in 2024 to find a great bakery or Chinese coffee shop. China has become a Mecca for such brands as Starbucks, Luckin Coffee and other coffee chains. However let’s face it they are not our first choice. Coffee is much a lifestyle choice as it is necessity in our daily lives, but what do you do when you’re not into that plastic commercial experience? Then let me give you a suggestion. If you’re genuinely into good coffee and great bread and your in Futian, why don’t you check out Baker’s Base coffee shop.

Location

Situated in Shangmeilin, Futian, Baker’s Base began as a small shop that baked bread. It started in a nearby location that barely enough room to move, but it has since grown into a great local venue for coffee and bread lovers in the local community. Baker’s Base is not just one of the typical coffee shops in China. It been around for about 6 years that I know about, and probably has been around longer than that. No matter how long it’s been around it’s now an essential part of the community for many.

Ambience

Baker’s Base is a beloved part of the Shangmeilin’s community and coffee culture. Futian, with a relaxed and inviting vibe. The outdoor seating is arguably some of the best in the area, perfect for chilling, chatting, smoking, or enjoying pastries.

Weekdays and mornings are quieter, ideal for getting work done. It can also be a great spot in the evenings for a quiet chat with friends. It’s not the biggest coffee shop in Shenzhen but I especially appreciate the indoor seating, which has plenty of tables, both suitable for groups and for couples, or even lonely individuals like myself. That said it’s just as popular among younger consumers as it is with professionals. I would say from experience that Baker’s Base can get busy on the weekends and holidays, so get in your orders early and grab seat when you can if that’s when your planning to turn up.

Prices

The pricing at this cafe is generally fair, especially for coffee and bread, which are well-priced given the quality. The Cakes however are more expensive than let’s say, Starbucks, but definitly less expensive than other fancy eateries around Nanshan, and Futian. Jack (the boss) does insist though that he uses the best ingredients in every batch of cake. Which from experience I tend to agree with, I wish he’d bring back the brownies though!

Service

The service is generally good, though it can get quite busy, especially on weekends and holidays. Despite the crowd, the staff manages to keep things running smoothly and maintain a welcoming atmosphere. If you can’t make it in person Baker’s does coffee deliveries, via popular apps such as Meituan.

Drinks, Bread & Cakes

The coffee here though not the best, but it is still good a good fresh coffee. The competition for good coffee beans in Shenzhen is very high these days, in case you haven’t noticed. Baker’s is somewhat of a local landmark for a coffee and a good bread. There’s also a selection of other beverages if coffee is not your thing. The selection of breads they bake fresh here everyday is pretty impressive for a small place. If you go there I highly reccoment their chocolate croissants. Their breads are some of the best I have had in Shenzhen full stop. Which is a constant temptation for me because I seem to be on an almost constant diet these days. It’s hard to stay slim in China!

While Baker’s Base offers a limited selection of cakes, they are consistently tasty and well put together. The cakes are often fresher, more imaginative and better than most places, but in my opinion not as impressive as their breads.

Value for Money

Bakers Base provides great value, especially for us coffee drinkers. Their delicious breads are especially well priced. Overall, Baker’s Base strikes a nice balance, delivering quality and experience that feel worth the price.

Final Thoughts

The café is at a fantastic spot in Futian and is perfect for bread and coffee lovers. With a great atmosphere, and a well deserved reputation for bread, it’s a wonderful place to relax, work, or simply enjoy the afternoon. Whether it’s the bread, coffee, or outdoor seating that draws you in, Baker’s Base is well worth a visit. Honestly for myself and many coffee fans Baker’s Base is one of my first choices. There also rumblings of a second location in Luohu which would be a great addition to the Luohu coffee scene. Bakers Base is in no doubt a leader in the local bread, coffee industry and I am sure it will be around for many years to come.
