The Crazy Coconut Bar – A Unique Bar Experience In Shenzhen

There is a crazy bar in Shenzhen that is not quite like any other. It’s operated by Matt who is both businessman and local legend in the nightlife and party event scene.

He has a strong loyal crowd of friends and patrons, who are as unique and friendly as The Crazy Coconut Bar and Matt himself.

Location

Although I never quite made it round to his previous location, this location in Baishilong, Longhua is the lastest iteration and I believe the best. It’s a virtual rooftop bar as it sits on the top floor of the local mall in baishlong. It easy to find, just hop onto line 4, up past Shangmeilin, and Minle. It’s actually really close to Futian and easy enough to find. The Crazy Coconut is simply adjacent to the subway line.

Ambience

The bar though still fairly new feels like a local pub and in Matt’s own words it’s “work in progress” the chaos of the bar just adds to the fun if you ask me. I have been there several times of the last month, and the number of people, and the mixed range of people who turn up to his events surprises me. The bar has a solid mix of both locals and non locals, with a wide range of nationalities. The place is definitely a melting pot of party goers.

Once I turned up and there was an English corner in progress, which give both foreigners and local Chinese a chance to catch up and chat. There is a bunch of board games to play, which really helped with the English corner that I accidentally ended up at.

If you have the taste for chess, the place has a few keen players who turn up there.

Oh did I mention how late it closes? Let’s just say it’s a late-night bar, though definitely not a club. I’m pretty sure Matt is half human, half night cat.

Drinks

It’s a bar, It has all the normal suspects in terms of alcohol. You want beer? He’s got draft and cans. If you want a typical cocktail or shots of fireball there is that too. Whiskey and all of its friends are there too.

Food

I haven’t eaten there yet, because I’m almost always on a constant diet and try not to eat too late. I have seen patrons digging into nachos, with meat sauces and I know there are hotdogs and even burgers. I have definitely seen happy and hungry customers munching away, so I’m pretty sure it’s all pretty tasty.

Service

Matt is always on point, even when the place gets busy. Food and drinks always arrive in quick time, and Matt himself is very welcoming to all and makes you feel at home pretty quickly.

Prices

Well I’m a big cocktail guy, and I know they cost 35 RMB a glass, so the beer has to be pretty damn cheap as well. I don’t remember the last bunch of shots I paid for, but it felt very reasonable. I would go as far to say, you don’t have worry too much, unless you’re buying rounds of drinks for the whole bar.

Final thoughts

If you’re a local, a teacher, actor or businessman, or traveler or if this is your first night and your hotel is not to far do yourself a favour and pop in.  The cost of eating and drinking there is exceptionally budget friendly, just as the bar, and patrons are very welcoming and easy going.

You don’t have to go to a trendy nightclub in Sea world (Shekou) in Nanshan to find a great atmosphere to chill and meet people. It’s really a no brainer. If you’re in the area pop to enjoy the lively atmosphere and stay till late night. If you’re in the area it’s still worth checking out. I would highly recommend this place.  There is not another place like this in the Shenzhen nightlife scene, and one of the best bars I have been to in terms friendliness and cost.  Me personally I would choose “The Crazy Coconut Bar” to one of the many night clubs in Coco Park, Luohu for a chance to simply unwind any day and chat with new friends. On those nights, when I want a long night, when I want to experience that after party vibe, this place has to be one of the best bars in Shenzhen for this.
